Does Medicare Supplement Plan G Cover Foreign Travel
Does Medicare Supplement Plan G Cover Foreign Travel?
Original Medicare eligibility is a big milestone for most seniors. But with the milestone often comes the disappointment of finding out that Medicare doesn’t cover all of your healthcare expenses.
Medicare Part A helps cover hospital inpatient care and skilled nursing units. Medicare Part B provides outpatient care, visits to medical offices, mental health services and DME (durable medical equipment).
Original Medicare Parts A and B both have coinsurance, copayments, a deductible and zero ceiling on how much out-of-pocket costs you’ll end up covering for certain procedures, medications and treatments.
Medicare Advantage plans as an option
Many recipients of Medicare make the decision to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans provide all of the benefits of Medicare Parts A and B, but also may include other benefits such as prescription drug coverage, fitness programs, dental and vision care.
Other Medicare beneficiaries choose to remain on Original Medicare. However, some recipients want a way to supplement the coverage gaps of Parts A and B. A solution to this may be a Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, plan. These are supplemental insurance products that are available for purchase, each labeled with a letter from A through N.
Medicare Supplement Plan G is one of the Medigap options you may choose, but if you travel abroad frequently, you may want to consider its costs and benefits.
Researching Medigap plans
When you start researching different Medicare Supplement plans, there are a couple of key questions that you’ll want to ask. These will help expedite your process of selecting the plan that’s right for you. Consider the following:
1. What will you be paying for a monthly plan premium?
2. What conditions are factored into how much you’ll pay for a premium? As an example, will the premium be based on factors such as gender, smoking history, overall health status or marital status?
3. Do all plan owners pay the same premiums regardless of their age, or will there be premium increases imposed on the plan as you continue to age?
4. Will any pre-existing conditions hamper the timing or eligibility of joining certain Medicare Supplement plans?
5. Will my plan help cover medical expenses if I am traveling abroad?
Does Medicare Supplement Plan G cover foreign travel?
Medicare Supplement Plan G is well-known for its highly robust coverage, when compared side-by-side with other supplement policies. Medicare Supplement Plan G is also one of the Medigap plans that will help cover foreign travel.
Emergency care during foreign travel is covered in cases that began within the initial 60 days of the start of your trip. After a deductible is met, the benefit will amount to 80% of the charges that are invoiced for medically necessary emergency healthcare outside the boundaries of the United States. The deductible is currently $250, with a lifetime limit set at $50,000.
